Eight students for the new doctor of missiology program started their first class on Monday morning, Aug 22, 2016 at the Seminary.
AIIAS administration were present in the classroom to personally greet the students. The institution’s president, Dr. Stephen Guptill welcomed the group remarking that it was a historic moment for the institution as it aligned itself to the strategic need of the world church.
“The General Conference approached AIIAS to offer the DMiss program because there is need for this part of the world,” says Dr. Guptill. So far the only other Adventist institution offering the DMiss program is Andrews University in Michigan, USA.
The DMiss program is offered as a cohort based program where each cohort offers a particular area of specialization—world religion, urban studies, intercultural studies and secularism.
The curriculum of the DMiss program is designed on four modules. Students can complete the program by spending four weeks in residence at AIIAS every year during the delivery of each module.
The course being taught was ‘Approaches in Applied Theology Research in Mission’ by senior mission expert, Dr. Bruce Bauer.
Altogether, this first batch of mission ‘specialists’ come from the Philippines, Indonesia, Brazil, Hong Kong, and Myanmar.
