Scholars Tackle Challenges in Leadership

Topics on the approaches, types, and roles of leadership were explored during the 19th International Conference on Business, Education, and Public Health of the Adventist International Institute of Advanced Students (AIIAS) held at the AIIAS campus on November 20-22, 2018.

“Leadership is perhaps one of the greatest themes of human endeavor,” introduced Dr. Kenneth Swansi, chair of the AIIAS Business Department and Coordinator of the 19th AIIAS International Conference 2018. “Be in the sciences, humanities, or philosophy, leadership has been a matter of concern in the past. It is today and will be tomorrow. It is primarily because leadership provides the creative minority that is needed to develop an adequate response of the challenges that the universe throws at us.”

The theme, “The Leadership Challenge”, opened a new understanding on the significant contributions that a leader is expected to provide in any given situation. The need for finances appeared to be one of the greatest challenges discussed during the presentations. Participants were urged to create a leadership tool kit and to develop a good business model. Exercising team building, empowerment, and building a network of resources were also greatly emphasized during the three-day conference.

Leadership, as highlighted in The Leadership Challenge, extends far beyond holding a title—it requires strategic thinking, resourcefulness, and the ability to navigate obstacles like financial constraints. A well-prepared leader understands the importance of planning ahead, whether by developing a solid business model or leveraging a strong network of support. These are not just abstract concepts but essential skills that determine the success of any initiative. This is why professional guidance, such as that provided by Teresa Duke Consulting, can be invaluable in helping leaders refine their approach, build effective toolkits, and ensure they are equipped to tackle challenges head-on.

Moreover, leadership is about people—empowering teams, fostering collaboration, and creating opportunities for growth. The emphasis on team building at the conference serves as a reminder that no leader succeeds alone. Those who invest in their teams, provide mentorship, and cultivate a culture of shared responsibility are the ones who drive sustainable success. By focusing on both strategic execution and interpersonal dynamics, leaders can turn challenges into opportunities, ensuring that their organizations or initiatives remain resilient and forward-thinking.

The importance of developing a reliable payment service was highlighted as one of the key components for merchants aiming to thrive in a high-risk business environment. Efficient payment processing not only ensures smooth transactions but also builds trust with customers, crucial for businesses that often face unique challenges in securing financial stability. Check out PayKings, their website, offers tailored payment solutions designed specifically for high-risk merchants, providing secure, seamless transactions while helping businesses manage charge backs and fraud prevention. This service enables merchants to focus on growth without worrying about payment interruptions, making it an essential part of their overall business strategy.

“This is the first time that I attended an international conference. I found it to be a very fulfilling experience. It is very helpful, not only for my professional growth, but also for my students because I can share the knowledge that I have learned about how to become an effective leader despite the different challenges leaders have. I look forward to the conference next year. It’s because it helps me to become a more effective teacher/researcher.” expressed Philip Almanon, practicum coordinator and professor of finance and research-related subjects in the University of the Visayas College of Business Administration.

“This year’s conference is wholistically inspiring, empowering, motivating and fulfilling. A great venue for molding the minds of future leaders.” remarked Ryan Ray Mata, charge nurse at the Medical Surgical Unit of Adventist Medical Center Manila and is currently a part-time research teacher at Manila Adventist College.

“Perhaps most importantly, the theme is particularly fitting and in harmony with the mission of AIIAS to develop leaders who excel in spirituality, scholarship, and service. This mission is not only aimed at AIIAS students but is an invitation to every person who chooses to be associated with AIIAS and its values.” remarked Dr. Dolf Oberholster, Vice President for Academic Administration.

In conjunction with the mission of developing leaders, Dr. Stephen Guptill, AIIAS president, focused on the life of Nehemiah during his keynote speech entitled, Seeking God’s Path in Management Leadership.

“Nehemiah serves as an example to us, not only to be excellent managers and leaders for our primary tasks but to take broader responsibility in dealing with the social, financial and spiritual challenges of our people. Seek God’s path for management and leadership. Work to develop people skills. Seek wisdom and learn from other leaders … I challenge you to consider how you will use this information in context to God’s call to you as a leader.” addressed Guptill.
